Ethiopia: We Are Here To Resist, Strive and Purge

Resist.  Strive.  Purge.

According to the Ethiopian ruling party’s self-assessment, since it came to power Seven (7) Years Ago, it has brought about tangible changes on Three (3) National Agendas, despite the fact that, over the Last Two (2) Years, Ethiopia’s Historic Enemies and their Quislings (Egypt, Eritrea) were not happy by its decisive military victory in the North [Tigray] being capped by a peace treaty in Pretoria South Africa.  The enemies pursued Two (2) Strategies to weaken Ethiopia. Now, the enemies are Employing Six (6) Strategies against Ethiopia, but that’s okay because the Prosperity Party has Seven (7) Priorities to decisively address them on the eve of Ethiopia’s Seventh (7th) Election.

So reported the Council (Central Committee) of the Prosperity Party (“Africa’s largest party with 16 million members” per its Chairman, Abiy Ahmed) at the conclusion of the First Ordinary Meeting it held between July 30 and August 2, 2025, following its Second Congress of January 31 to February 2, 2025.

The statement was published in, Amharic, in the Facebook Page of Prosperity Party and is appended below, along with an auto translation to English.  Since Eritrea is often lumped with Ethiopia’s Historic Enemy (Egypt), and since some of Ethiopia’s national agenda, strategies and priorities directly affect Eritrea, it is useful to address some of the claims.

1. Three Tangible Changes

1.A. We have implemented political and economic reforms without being hindered by challenges. This has strengthened our internal resilience and diminished opportunities for adversaries.

1.B By carrying out appropriate and legal actions regarding the Abay (Nile), we have transformed our geostrategic position in the region.

1.C We have made our natural and historical right to access a seaport an international agenda. Through this, we have advanced more than one chapter in restoring our geostrategic position in the Red Sea.

What is important here to note is that the Prosperity Party is not making a claim to access a seaport on the basis of law but nature and history.  Equally important is what’s not mentioned: its definition of “access.”  By access, it does not mean that which is legally afforded to landlocked nations by the Law of the Sea but, as Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh (IOG) who proposed a joint Ethiopia-Djibouti management of Tadjourah Port but found out that that was not good enough for Ethiopia, it means more.  He explained this in an interview with French magazine J’Afrique which was translated by Djiboutian Geopolitical Analyst in Horn Of Africa, Abdul-Wahab Youssouf:

Jeune Afrique: Your relations with your large neighbor, Ethiopia, were strained in 2024 following comments made by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who claimed access to the sea for his country. Have these tensions eased?

IOG: Yes. I believe that Abiy Ahmed has understood that this claim cannot be framed within a power struggle. Ethiopia can access the ports of Assab, Djibouti, Berbera, or Mogadishu without undermining the existence of its neighbors. The mediation undertaken by Turkey has played a positive role in this regard. As for us, we have clearly communicated to Addis Ababa that Djibouti is not Crimea.

Jeune Afrique: You proposed a joint management of your port in Tadjourah to Ethiopia. What was their response?

IOG: The Ethiopians sent us a delegation with a proposal that we could not accept: to establish a corridor with extraterritoriality between the Ethiopian border and Tadjourah and to set up a naval base for their navy. This was not what we had agreed upon. Therefore, this matter is now closed.

Jeune Afrique: What are your thoughts on the policy pursued by the United Arab Emirates in East Africa, from Sudan to Somalia? As is known, the Emiratis are hostile towards you due to the unresolved dispute regarding the management of the port of Djibouti…

IOG: Yes, because we refuse the dictates of DP World and have no intention of yielding to them. Furthermore, I believe, and I am far from being alone in this view, that their overall policy is profoundly destabilizing for the entire region.

It should be noted here that IOG is not a big fan of the Eritrean government: he is often at the UN to address two outstanding issues he has with Eritrea: Prisoners of War from their 2008 war who are still not fully accounted for, and the lack of resolution on their border dispute.  He still found Ethiopia’s demand, and the behavior of its major benefactor, UAE, objectionable.  And this is a guy who hosts the Navy of five countries (US, France, China, Japan, Italy) with personnel from four others (Germany, Spain, UK and Saudi Arabia.)  He knows that the difficulty with Ethiopia is that once they are in, they never want to leave because their “natural, historical” argument is oh-so-elastic.  Just this month, it told Somalia’s Federal troops to vacate sovereign Somalia territory in Jubaland.

Everybody wants to give Ethiopia “sea access.”  Nobody wants to accommodate its “historical, natural” claims because those are codes demanding that the transit country cede territory.

2. Two Main Strategies By Historical Enemies To Weaken Ethiopia – Past Tense

2.1 Inciting conflict in various regions, and

2.2 Discrediting the government through digital media.

It is not credible to argue that the Ethiopian government’s reforms that the Prosperity Party takes credit for had no role in either inciting or exacerbating the conflicts in Oromia (2018), Tigray (2020), and Amhara (2022). But that is an Ethiopian issue and to the extent the “historical enemies” had a role, it’s probably because the Prosperity Party invited them, thanked them, and wouldn’t have survived without them.

3. Six Strategies Employed By Historical Enemies Against Ethiopia – Present Tense

3.1 Mobilizing destructive forces for their benefit;

3.2 Keeping Ethiopia in a state of unrest;

3.3 Exploiting public grievances arising from governance issues for rebellion;

3.4 Promoting divisive agendas;

3.5 Using media as a tool to incite unrest; and

3.6 Engaging in economic sabotage through foreign currency and commodity manipulation.

Those Egyptians! I wouldn’t put it past them. Facebook busted Egypt enlisting Amharic-speakers to pretend they are against the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). There is no Ethiopian, in fact no African, who would be against GERD.  Ethiopia is right to be proud over its water and to jealously guard its sovereignty over it.   Now it just needs to think of other countries’ waters the same way.

As for Eritrean Government, I wouldn’t put it past them. However, there is no credible, independent media report that shows they are guilty of all the above-listed strategies. Yet.  The Prosperity Party needs to remind itself that groups, armed or otherwise, do not exist unless they have popular support and the Ethiopian government should probably spend more time addressing that instead of externalizing its problems to others.  Moreover, isn’t Ethiopia doing the same thing with some Eritrean opposition groups?

But the most telling thing about the Prosperity Party’s motivation for stating what is above is what it intends to do about it:

4. Seven Priorities to Decisively Address The Enemies – Future Tense

4.1 To explore peaceful options in all directions that can prevent conflict and to do everything necessary for armed groups that choose to fight peacefully;

4.2 To enforce the law firmly against forces that reject peace and attempt to create problems for the people and the country’s property;

4.3 To address the people’s questions on good governance, justice, and the economy at every step with Ethiopia’s capacity;

4.4 To provide accurate and truthful information to the people at all times and to expose false information;

4.5 To combat leaders and officials in institutions who cause indiscipline, corruption, and administrative abuses;

4.6 To make the development initiatives we have started in agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, mining, and information technology more successful to ensure the success of ongoing initiatives; and to achieve urban and rural transformation through public participation;

4.7 In the field of diplomacy, we have agreed to uphold Ethiopia’s national interests in every way

Again, most of the above deal with intra-Ethiopian politics.  But close observation of African politics leads one to conclude that “enforce the law firmly” means mass arrests, drone strikes and emergency laws.  Moreover, in the “ethnic federalism” Ethiopia has chosen as its governance model, it also means any reshuffling of government officials will be seen from an ethnic prism, particularly since the nation’s Security Apparatus is run by those who share the ethnic identity of the Man In Charge of the country (as it always is throughout Africa.)  It is difficult to sell “good governance” in an environment where public trust is gone.   The Prosperity Party’s claim that it is about providing “truthful information” when its record shows it has killed the private media and exiled journalists; is now attacking social media content creators, and  is hooked on misinformation and disinformation (“we are exporting grain”) is not credible.  In Africa, combating “corruption” is always code for elimination of  political enemies. Thus, the Council’s new slogan of “Resist, Strive and Purge.”

The one relevant item to Eritrea, about upholding Ethiopia’s national interests in every way  (በሁሉም መንገድ) sounds very much like “by any means necessary” which, for Ethiopia, has always meant war.

It all appears too dark and ominous for a reader to be optimistic.

We, the members of the Prosperity Party Council, held our regular meeting from July 30 to August 2, 2025, and thoroughly discussed global, continental, regional, and national issues. Our council reviewed the ways in which Ethiopia’s national interests are being upheld in the current geopolitical context. It also evaluated the efforts being made to achieve prosperity through inclusive development. The council noted that the evolving global geopolitical situation presents both opportunities and challenges for our country and has outlined strategies to overcome challenges and capitalize on opportunities to better safeguard our nation’s interests.

As is well known, a few years ago, we successfully overcame the war in the northern part of our country. Not only did we achieve victory, but we also solidified our military success through the Pretoria Peace Agreement. However, our enemies, who desired a prolonged war but were thwarted by the agreement, have turned to other strategies. Although they have not succeeded as planned, these entities continue their efforts to undermine the government’s strength and the unity of our people by leveraging extremists operating in various parts of our country. Led and coordinated by our historical enemies, and with some extremist collaborators as their tools, our adversaries’ belligerent ambitions persist to this day.

Over the past two years, our enemies have employed two main strategies to destabilize the unity of our people and government. The first is inciting conflict in various regions, and the second is discrediting the government through digital media. However, they have not achieved the results they anticipated in either campaign. Their chances of weakening Ethiopia are diminishing, and their fear that we could falter has only increased.

The current generation has learned from our historical setbacks and the realities of the world. Instead of being fragmented as in the past, we are working to strengthen our national unity and institutional capacity, which has significantly reduced our vulnerabilities. We will continue to build a national capacity capable of overcoming challenges and achieving our national vision. Above all, our new strategy fully embraces peaceful political opportunities. Over the past seven years, we have achieved success in all fields despite challenges. In particular, we have brought tangible changes in three national agendas:

• We have implemented political and economic reforms without being hindered by challenges. This has strengthened our internal resilience and diminished opportunities for adversaries. • By carrying out appropriate and legal actions regarding the Abay (Nile), we have transformed our geostrategic position in the region. • We have made our natural and historical right to access a seaport an international agenda. Through this, we have advanced more than one chapter in restoring our geostrategic position in the Red Sea.

Our political, social, and economic reforms are progressing successfully without being slowed or faltering. Far from being a source of internal vulnerability, they have transformed into a foundation of national strength. By sealing internal cracks, we have thwarted the national and sub-national agendas of adversaries who collaborate with Ethiopia’s historical enemies to attack our nation. We have removed our politics from the divisive identity-based political marketplace and reoriented it toward ensuring prosperity through inclusive national unity.

On one hand, through the institutional reforms and macroeconomic improvements we have initiated, we have strengthened our country’s internal capacity. On the other hand, by thoroughly understanding the geopolitical landscape, we have upheld Ethiopia’s national interests.

Ethiopia is undoubtedly progressing. This truth can be verified through observation, evidence, data, and fieldwork. There are millions of witnesses to this success, from national to international platforms. However, this is not something our historical enemies and their proxies can accept. Therefore, they are making their final attempts to derail Ethiopia from its path.

Our council has assessed that they are employing six strategies in this final attempt: mobilizing destructive forces for their benefit; keeping Ethiopia in a state of unrest; exploiting public grievances arising from governance issues for rebellion; promoting divisive agendas; using media as a tool to incite unrest; and engaging in economic sabotage through foreign currency and commodity manipulation.

To decisively counter this final attempt by our historical enemies, we, the members of the Prosperity Party Council, recognize that we must be prepared, resolute, and effective in both word and deed. In particular, we are determined to exceed expectations in the following seven areas:

• To explore peaceful options in all directions that can prevent conflict and to do everything necessary for armed groups that choose to fight peacefully; • To enforce the law firmly against forces that reject peace and attempt to create problems for the people and the country’s property; • To address the people’s questions on good governance, justice, and the economy at every step with Ethiopia’s capacity; • To provide accurate and truthful information to the people at all times and to expose false information; • To combat leaders and officials in institutions who cause indiscipline, corruption, and administrative abuses; • To make the development initiatives we have started in agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, mining, and information technology more successful; to ensure the success of ongoing initiatives; and to achieve urban and rural transformation through public participation; • In the field of diplomacy, we have agreed to uphold Ethiopia’s national interests in every way.

In general, we, the members of the Prosperity Party Council, have resolved to carry out our next tasks under the principle of “resisting, striving, and refining” to ensure Ethiopia’s journey to prosperity succeeds ahead of schedule. We will counter the challenges and schemes of our enemies. We will strive harder than ever to ensure Ethiopia’s prosperity succeeds in all fields. We will diligently address ideas, cultures, habits, infiltrators, and collaborators that obstruct our journey to prosperity.

We have a country we love, a national purpose and dream we stand for. We have a people we serve. We have a nation to build. We have national interests to uphold. Our enemies, however, seek to destroy, dismantle, and disrupt all of these. Building, constructing, and strengthening require greater capacity and effort than destroying, obstructing, or dismantling.

Victory and Ethiopia are intertwined. However, there is a victory greater than all others: securing victory with minimal losses and tying it to lasting results. The greatest victory is not just achieving success but also ensuring strategic goals. A sustainable victory means strategically overcoming not only internal collaborators but also external enemies.

Prosperity demands diverse patriotism. It requires not only the sacrifice of blood but also the dedication of sweat. Patriotism and readiness change a nation’s history. We, the members of the Prosperity Party Council, have risen to strive ourselves and mobilize the people. We have resolved to refine ourselves and the nation. As a patriotic leadership, we are determined to fight with all our might. The Prosperity leadership is a patriot in both economy and battle. It unites the people, fights at the forefront, and strengthens its foundation. We renew our commitment to achieve this more than ever before.

Our era demands diverse diligence. The world is dynamic and fraught with crises. Our country faces numerous public needs and challenges, as well as various disruptive forces testing it. In such a time and context, leadership requires diverse competencies and diligence. Our historical enemies and internal collaborators are determined to weaken Ethiopia. At this moment, we have thoroughly discussed and resolved that, on one hand, we must counter enemy attacks, and on the other, implement our long-term goals and objectives. We have agreed that our leaders at every level must perform multiple tasks simultaneously, ensuring that while we defend against enemies and maintain stability, we do not falter in development.

The Prosperity Party honors our diversity and strengthens our unity. It is a party that learns from the past and shapes the future. We will effectively use digital patriotism to counter the destructive narratives of our enemies and amplify our own. While our enemies, driven by vengeance, spread destructive narratives to dismantle our unity and obstruct our prosperity, we have resolved to be patriotic in amplifying our narrative, rooted in our identity and vision, to our people.
We will work diligently to address service delivery issues that frustrate the public and enhance public satisfaction. We will identify and resolve the sources of public grievances. By listening to the people’s concerns, we will respond swiftly through planning and follow-up. We will root out infiltration that obstructs our national and public purpose, reject tribalism, and fight corruption and opportunism. By ensuring that foreign currency movements, both domestically and internationally, are driven by patriotism, and by ensuring the integrity of commodity circulation, we will combat economic sabotage by internal and external enemies.

Furthermore, we, as the Prosperity Party leadership and members, and as Ethiopian citizens, will actively participate to ensure that the upcoming seventh national election is democratic, legal, and reflective of the people’s full participation.

To ensure that the decisions and commitments outlined above succeed and establish Ethiopia’s prosperity on a solid foundation, we call on all Prosperity Party members and Ethiopians to unite in inclusive national unity.
